Ohio Fire Safety Coalition Conducts Fire Sprinkler Education at
Stark County BIA 2005 Parade of HomesFrom August 13-28 the Ohio Fire Safety Coalition (OFSC), partnered with the Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition (HFSC), conducted a very important builder and consumer education program that took place in Jackson Township, Ohio during the Stark County BIA 2005 Parade of Homes. The program, funded by a FEMA Government Grant to HFSC (Built for Life), provided education to home builders and consumers regarding the life saving value of a home fire sprinkler system. Consumers and homebuilders had the opportunity to receive information at a home fire sprinkler system education booth as well as tour the fire sprinklered Parade Model Home built by Homes by John Hershberger.
Each year more than 4,000 people in the United States die in fires. Fire kills more people in the United States each year than all natural disasters combined. Eighty percent of all fire-related deaths occur in the home. The single most effective way to prevent fire-related deaths is the installation of residential fire sprinklers systems. Combined with smoke alarms, fire sprinklers cut the risk of dying in a home fire by 82% as compared to having neither.
In addition to two weeks of Parade education activities on Saturday, August 20th, The Ohio Fire Safety Coalition sponsored a “Burn Trailer” fire sprinkler demonstration for the public. The trailer was located at entrance to the the Stark County Parade of Homes. Consumers and homebuilders had a chance to view a live fire being extinguished by a fire sprinkler system. The “Burn Trailer” was brought and displayed by the Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute (MFRI) - University of Maryland in College Park, Maryland. The activities of the day were emceed by Madison Woods from WHBC 94.1 FM with live broadcast coverage.
